'Conducting an orchestra: art, technique or magic?' Presentation by Dr. Carlos Calderón.

Barcelona

On March 21st, we are honored to once again host a presentation at MINIM Barcelona featuring Dr. Carlos Calderón, a renowned figure in humanities, architecture, and music. A frequent speaker at esteemed venues like the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Palau de la Música, as well as various Catalan cultural institutions, Calderón will delve into the role of the Orchestra Conductor.

Despite being the most visible figure during a concert, the conductor remains widely misunderstood. Opinions on their role vary from dismissing it as something anyone can do to likening them to a musical superhuman who must surpass the knowledge of over a hundred musicians combined. At some point, many of us have questioned: “Is this character truly essential?” The resounding answer is yes. Their presence is not only vital during the concert but also before and after.

Utilizing abundant audiovisual examples and delivering a speech that strikes a balance between accessibility and depth, Professor Calderón aims to demystify the conductor's role. Beyond merely bridging the gap between composer and orchestra, the conductor also guides the audience through their auditory and aesthetic journey. Their comprehensible gestures, mastery of historical, formal, and musical aspects, and an elusive X-factor collectively craft an immersive musical experience.

It's no surprise that the Orchestra Conductor has often been used as a metaphor for other forms of leadership and management. However, understanding both the parallels and distinctions enhances our comprehension. Just as conducting is not merely about issuing commands, leading an orchestra extends far beyond mere hand movements. Similarly, in the realm of management, diverse styles exist, yet they all aim for the same goal: the accurate interpretation of plans and the adept management of expectations.
