Bea Sarrias and Morrosko Vila-San-Juan exhibition at MINIM Madrid

Madrid

From Barcelona to Brussels, and from Brussels to Madrid. Coinciding with the celebration of the International Contemporary Art Fair of Spain (ARCO), MINIM Madrid inaugurates the exhibition 'BCN-BXL. Coderch–DeKoninck. Beyond Time' by Bea Sarrias and Morrosko Vila-San-Juan dedicated to the rationalist architecture of José Antonio Coderch (1913-1984) and Louis Herman De Koninck (1896-1984).

The Barcelona artist, known for her portraits of iconic buildings and a virtuoso handling of light and shadow, has established a connection between the simple, functional and symmetrical geometry of the Spanish architect Coderch and the Belgian architect De Koninck.

Although they belonged to different generations -De Koninck in the period between the wars and Coderch in the Spanish postwar period-, both manifested the same way of understanding light, time and space. Both had worked for the bourgeois class of their time, understanding their needs well and contributing to the creation of a social and daily imaginary that still endures. Their works have surpassed time, have been revalued and are still compelling today.

This is how the tenants of their homes tell it in the documentary that accompanies the exhibition, directed by Morrosko Vila-San-Juan. The director gives voice to the inhabitants of the houses, in Barcelona and the Mediterranean coast, in the case of Coderch, and in Brussels and surroundings, in the case of De Koninck. Through their testimonies, the viewer can get an idea of what it means to live in an iconic house. In addition, architects such as the Belgian Bruno Erpicum or the Spanish Óscar Tusquets also participate. In this way, the audiovisual piece contextualizes the connection between the work of these two architects, establishing an unusual dialogue.

Bea Sarrias and Morrosco Vila-San-Juan began a joint project years ago that documents her pictorial work through his filming. ‘BCN-BXL. Coderch–DeKoninck. Más allá del tiempo ’is his last work with four hands. It premieres for the first time at MINIM Madrid after being exhibited at the artistic center of La Vallee (Brussels), at the Martin's Atelier gallery and at the Spain Arts & cent LAB space in Belgium.

The exhibition brings together a total of 28 canvases, drawings and sketches by Bea Sarrias, by LAB 36 (Senda Gallery).
