On 2 October, MINIM Barcelona had the honour of hosting a talk with Michael Anastassiades, the Cyprus-born designer based in London and one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary design, in collaboration with B&B Italia and MAXALTO. The conversation, led by design journalist and critic Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, explored the creative philosophy of a designer who conceives every new object as a question rather than an answer: what can something contribute that does not yet exist?

During the talk, Anastassiades spoke about his creative process, his relationship with art, and his search for that moment of tension between stillness and what is about to happen — which he considers the essence of his work. For the occasion, the Barcelona showroom at Via Augusta 185 hosted his most recognised pieces for the Italian brand: the Jack collection and the Parallel Structure tables.

About Michael Anastassiades

Michael Anastassiades is a Cyprus-born designer based in London. He studied civil engineering at Imperial College London and completed a master’s in industrial design at the Royal College of Art. In 1994 he founded his own studio, where he explores contemporary notions of culture and aesthetics. His work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He has designed for brands including Flos and B&B Italia.

Anatxu Zabalbeascoa is a journalist and architecture and design critic for El País. Holding a degree in Art History, she has studied at the Royal College of Art in London. She is the author of Todo sobre la casa and Vidas construidas.
